ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Designing Egos is an exhibition of the work of Eun Hyung Kim. Throughout Kim’s dense floor-to-ceiling wall drawings, drawing-covered paper objects, and animated videos, myriad black and white cartoon scenes collide. Simplified figures, often reduced to a head or face, populate allegorical tableaus of tumult, connection, confrontation, and fantasy.
Kim describes his artistic process for Designing Egos as a “sweeping out” of thoughts and images from his mind and into his work. In Kim’s words, “This process of showing everything in my mind, paradoxical as it may seem, is to empty my mind. This is related to the very basic philosophical question ‘Who am I? ’ or ‘Who are we? ’ I repeat this practice by making numerous drawings, a process I have named ‘Designing Egos. ’”
Designing Egos was commissioned as one of the projects in the 2009–10 At the Edge: Innovative Art in Chicago series.
Designing Egos is presented concurrently with John’s Luv and What Manner of Person Art Thou?
