ABOUT THE EVENT

Gallery 400 is excited to host filmmaker Penny Lane in our new lecture space at UIC’s Art and Exhibition Hall—and yes, that is her real name! Known for her experimental feature-length documentaries and short films, Lane works across a wide range of media, including archival footage, animation, and YouTube videos. Her films capture deeply intimate aspects of the human experience, exploring joy and optimism, innocence and guilt, and suffering and longing. During her lecture, Lane will discuss her research methods, artistic process, and the inspirations behind her films.

About: Penny Lane has been making innovative nonfiction films for over a decade, including 8 feature documentaries. Some of these titles are HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT, CONFESSIONS OF A GOOD SAMARITAN, LISTENING TO KENNY G, HAIL SATAN?, NUTS! and OUR NIXON. Her films have premiered at Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca, SXSW and Rotterdam, and  have been financed and/or distributed by partners like HBO, Hulu, Magnolia Pictures, Netflix, Anonymous Content, Fremantle, Impact Partners, Sandbox Films, Concordia and Jigsaw.  

Penny was a college professor for over a decade, teaching film, video and new media art at Colgate University, Bard College, Hampshire College and Williams College. Now she works full time as a film director and co-founder with Gabriel Sedgwick of the production company Spinning Nancy. She and Gabriel  Executive Produced the hit HBO documentary TIME BOMB Y2K.
