Seventy-five students and faculty of the School of Art and Design at UIC collaborated in exploring the creative possibilities of a Canon Color Laser Copier, which was on loan to the school. The result was a portfolio of twenty artworks, published under the name of Color, a limited edition piece designed by design professor John Massey and printed by Rider Dickerson together with the Canon Color Laser Copier exhibition at Gallery 400. The project allowed the faculty and students to integrate their experiences in a variety of media (including photography, computer graphics, printmaking and painting) using the remarkable capacity of the Canon Color Laser Copier to layer, enhance, and transfer images in color. The machine helped the participating artists to transform their images into three-dimensional forms, to expand and distort them, to enhance and reduce them, and to shift their scale. As Lesley Schiff, an artist for whom the Canon Color Laser Copier plays a major role in her work, put it, the technology “keeps you in your culture. It ’s like America: electronic, direct, visual, spontaneous.”
