ABOUT THE EVENT
Join us for a screening of In conversation*/En conversación*, an asynchronous discussion between Crip* artists Christopher Robert Jones and Berenice Olmedo. Recorded between Central Illinois and Mexico City, the two exchange in-depth ideas about disability as a human condition, the repurposing of prosthetics, and the absence of the body in Olmedo’s work. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Crip* curator Liza Sylvestre and Christopher Robert Jones.
Berenice Olmedo (b. 1987, Oaxaca, Mexico) lives and works in Mexico City. Selected solo shows include: Toraco-Lumbo [SKOLIÓPHYSIS], Lodos, Mexico City (2019); Anthroprosthetic, Jan Kaps, Cologne (2018). Selected group shows include: Selfreconstruction: Detritus (curated by Abraham Cruzvillegas), Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte (MUCA), Mexico City (2018); Now in common, More opacity, Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte (MUCA ROMA), Mexico City (2018). Among forthcoming shows: Riga Biennial, Riga (2020); and Haus Moedrath – Räume für Kunst, Kerpen (2020).
Christopher Robert Jones is an artist and writer based in Illinois. Their research revolves around the “failure” or “malfunctioning” of the body and how those experiences are situated at points of intersection between Queer and Crip* discourses. They are the co-founder of Crip*—Cripistemology and the Arts, a transdisciplinary initiative that is housed within the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Crip*—Cripistemology and the Arts demonstrates the value of an applied cripistemelogical framework through the development of a pedagogical model that utilizes knowledge produced via a Crip/Disabled experience and explores the ways that Crip* is an integral part of art critical discourse and production. They are currently a Specialized Faculty in the Department of Art & Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
