Internship Opportunities

We are currently hiring interns for all positions for Summer 2019. Please see the descriptions below for more information.

The Gallery 400 internship program welcomes students and recent graduates who wish to broaden their education and professional experience by working at one of the nation’s most vibrant university galleries, showcasing work at the leading edge of contemporary art, architecture, and design. Under the guidance of gallery staff, interns assist in routine work that ranges from special projects and research to clerical support.

Internships require a commitment of 15-20 hours per week and are typically a semester in length (Summer Semester is May 6 - August 9). A major in art history or fine art is not required. All internships are unpaid, but academic credit can be arranged for students. Please contact your individual career or academic advisor to arrange for internship credit.

Archive

The Archive intern maintains Gallery 400’s physical exhibition and ephemera archive and on-site art library.

Responsibilities:

• Ongoing archival work related to recently completed exhibitions, programs, and events
• Maintain the Gallery’s library inventory and LibraryThing account
• Research and obtaining books and periodicals for the gallery Reading Room
• Use archive to provide contemporary materials to current exhibitions and programming

Desirable skills:

• A high degree of organization and attention to detail
• Strong writing skills
• Knowledge of Photoshop, Excel, and Adobe Bridge

Curatorial

The Curatorial Intern assists the Curatorial Team with exhibition development, research, and coordination efforts. This role provides substantial insight into curatorial practices and exhibition organization in a contemporary art gallery.

Responsibilities:

• Research prospective artists, artworks, and documentation for upcoming exhibitions
• Communicate with artists and guest curators
• Prepare loan agreements, shipping contracts, checklists, wall labels, and other exhibition documents
• Attend exhibition openings and select events
• Other administrative tasks as needed

Desirable skills:

• Significant knowledge of contemporary art
• Attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong editorial skills
• Ability to work independently
• Knowledge of InDesign and Excel

Communications

The Communications Intern assists the Communications Team in creating visibility for Gallery 400, its exhibitions, and programs, and in attracting new audiences through digital platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Keep website current
• Archive press clippings
• Create and distributing marketing materials (posters, postcards, and mailers)
• Post to social media platforms
• Maintain email and press contact lists
• Other administrative duties, as needed

Desirable skills:

• A high degree of organization
• Attention to detail
• Excellent proofreading skills
• Familiarity with social media sites preferred
• Knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, and Excel preferred.

Development

The Development Intern assists with various fundraising efforts for specific exhibitions and programs and general operating support.

Responsibilities:

• Research prospective funding sources for Gallery 400, specifically corporation, foundation, and government sources

• Create a system for tracking deadlines and organizing in-progress grant paperwork
• Assist with the preparation of proposals and mid-term and annual reports
• Draft communications for individual giving campaigns

• Excellent communication skills

Community Engagement & Public Programs Internship

The Community Engagement & Public Programs Intern provides support for the public programs, events, and community outreach associated with Gallery 400’s upcoming exhibitions.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct research on prospective audiences, both within the University of Illinois at Chicago community and in greater Chicago
• Perform outreach to promote relevant programming and invite potential and current partners to collaborate with the gallery
• Assist with development, planning, and execution of public programming
• Communicate with artists and other partners involved in Gallery 400 programs
• Staff programs and events as needed (includes occasional evenings and weekends) • Develop teaching resources for educators related to current and future exhibitions
• Lead gallery tours for students and the broader public
• Assemble contact information and correspondence for marketing and outreach

Graphic Design

The Graphic Design intern assists the Gallery in developing and producing promotional materials for exhibitions, film and video screenings, lectures, and other programs.

Responsibilities:

• Use Adobe Suite, modify templates to create postcards and yers
• Create new designs for other printed and digital promotional materials
• Create promotional graphics and short GIFs for publication on social media
• Assist in various Gallery design or administrative tasks, as needed

Desirable skills:

• A high degree of organization and attention to detail
• Excellent proofreading skills
• Ability to create materials in a timely manner
• Ability to stay on task without supervision
• Experience in print production and proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and HTML in a Macintosh environment.

Video Archive

 

The Video Archive Intern works to document Gallery 400 programming and the opportunity to produce and create content for website and social media platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Digitize video of past Gallery 400 lectures and events
• Edit and adding title cards to archival videos with Adobe Premiere or similar software
• Organize and posting archival video on the Gallery’s Vimeo page
• Create new video content around exhibitions and programs
• Complete videography tasks as available and based on skill level

Desirable skills:

• Experience with video editing software
• A high degree of organization and attention to detail.
• Experience with the UIC Moving Image Lab is preferred but not required.

Exhibition Preparation

 

The Exhibition Preparation intern assists with exhibition preparation and installation in a contemporary art gallery. This position is an excellent hands-on opportunity to develop valuable preparatory experience while working with Gallery 400’s Preparation Team.

Responsibilities:

• Assisting in gallery installation and preparation (includes installing artworks in various mediums, lighting, wall patching, painting, and packing and shipping artworks)
• Assisting in the maintenance of Gallery 400 facilities

Desirable skills:

• Familiarity with basic tools and audiovisual equipment
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
• Enthusiasm and a proven track record of prioritizing and completing multiple assignments
• Strong verbal communication skills and great interest in further developing preparatory skills.
• Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds.
